Sharking another Mako

Captain Paul Peluso and His 140 lbs Mako July 30 2010

July 30 2010.

Chris and I are currently in 1st place in the  8th. Annual MakoMatt/Noreast Mako-Thresher Big Dog Shootout, with our 159 lbs Mako from July 1.

I said to Chris we should go out 1 more time to see if we can land a bigger Shark and hold down our current position. The weather looked good for Friday and so we set sail at 4:30 am out of Moriches heading SE to look for the temp break and maybe a Tuna if were lucky. 10 miles out water temp 68, 20 miles out water temp 70 ok looks good here but lets keep going in search of some Tuna. about 25 Miles out the seas started to get a bit nasty 4′ to 6′ and we saw a pod of dolphins and decided to try for the tuna there since the seas were getting to large for us.

We trolled East and West for about 45 minutes but we didn’t have any luck. So I decided to head back in where the Seas were a little nicer and the temp break was.  So we headed north a bit and we set up shop on one of my favorite spots that I always catch Sharks at. Lines were in 8:30 am and we chummed up some Bunker, Tuna and a varietyof other left over bait fish from both Chris’s and my freezers.

Butterflied Mahi Mahi Filet

Set up for Sharks, 3 Lines Out

So around 10 am we decide to change out our baits and re-set them to hopefully entice a taker. After we re-set the deep and Middle lines I pulled in the Short line and swapped out the bunker for a Butterflied Mackerelbait while i was letting it out about 10′ down it got picked up right away. The Shark must have been hanging right under the boat and the reel started to tick off slowly, then a little faster. Chris says to me are you gonna let me set this one you got the last one I said be my guest and he let the Shark run and locked up the drag and FISH ON!!! Now for what ever reason the Shark came right to the boat I barely had time to put my gloves on and grabbed the wire leader. The Shark was under the boat and I puller her out just enough to see her tail and we both said MAKO!!! The Shark took off but didn’t get far. Chris instructed Neil to put the belt on and passed him the rod so that he was free to dart the and Gaff the Shark while I wired him. Chris just about got the harpoon tied off to the clete and the Mako was at the boat again. Chris hit the Shark in the perfect spot right behind the head and then got the Gaff into the Sharks Gills a few seconds later while I held him close to the boat. Neil then came over and he tail roped the Shark and that was all over for the Shark I’d say in about 10 minutes.

After that 10 am Mako bite the ocean really got calm and we decided to head in. We did see a few other fish and a Sea Turtle but no Tuna.

Catch of the Week

Capt.Paul(Dad) and Mia Angelina

Mia and Dad

Had the family out Sunday Evening.
We heard about the Insane Fluke Bay Bite going on
and wanted to get in on the action
So we planned an afternoon trip with the incoming tide.
Peter and I went a head of my family to check things out
I was shocked to find not much biting after hearing about a killer AM trip
I tried different color Squid rigs I like to use
I set Mia Up with a 4′ Pink one and that seemed to be the ticket
For she had the HOT hand landing 2 fish 1 being a keeper
You should have heard her I GOT ONE!!! I GOT ONE!!!
DAD, DAD, I GOT ONE!!!
It was great I love it when they catch fish it makes the whole trip worth wild.

I GOT ONE!!!

It took some convincing but Paul Anthony caught 1 too

MILLIONS OF BUNKERS

It was and Incredible sight to see I shot so UNDWEWATER VIDEO of the Bunker check it out.

July 9 2010

Today I had out Henry and Jimmy Andy and Capt.Adrian. We started off by the inlet and was coming up empty handed so we switched gears and went out looking for the BUNKER pods. And boy did we find them!!! MILLIONS of them I’d say about 1 acre of them the only problem was they were being ATTACKED by 12 lbs Blues!!!
They were moving west at about 5 mph trying to escape the Blues Teeth !!!
We tired everything , weighted them with a trail NG, Went up ahead of the school NG tried behind the school NG, Middle NG, No weight NG, Snag let em hang NG, Snag let em drop NG. Everyone was Bitten in two or inhaled by the BIGGEST SOB’S Blues. We released all but 1 that was so badly gut hooked he wasn’t gonna make it, so he became Shark Bait.
After about 2.5 hours of this we had enough, we even went looking for a different pod but found none east or west of that one… So we headed into the bay and Flukes for maybe 1 hour producing 1 21.5″ Keeper and a bunch of shorts.

LIGHTNING does Strike Twice

BIG DADDY DEAN LOCKE WITH 40 LBS BASS 7-2-2010

Got the call from good Buddy Chris (Codi-Jones) “Pablo OMG get out 50 lbs leaping out of the water off Smith Point !!!”  I was with Timmy and Dean at that time in Sam’s Club looking for out door furniture so we high tailed back to the dock and made a BEE-LINE for Smith Point. Upon arrival Chris holds up a Hugh 35-40 lbs bass. He tells us it quieted down but to stay right here for this was where all the action was. So we work the Bunker Pod with our buck tails and surprisingly come away with no fish??? I tell the guys lets play snag and drop. Which means snag a bunker with a bunker snag and let it drop to the bottom. So were all doing that NO LUCK??? I say OK lets put a few in the live well for use later. Then all of a sudden the big bass decide to go on the feed again ,YES!!!  As soon Timmy drops his Bunker next to the boat 4 or 5 of the biggest Bass I ever seen go after it. One smacks the bunker completely out of the water and another comes up and Timmy on with the biggest Bass he ever caught. Mean while Dean grabs my light tackle rod that’s rigged up with a buck tail and Bam he’s on too. This time Dean’s on with the fish in the above picture and he’s getting spooled but for what ever reason the fish turns and heads straight back to the boat. Thank God Dean as been in this situation before and he was able to keep up with the BIG GIRL till she turned off right at the boat and went long again. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ !!! It was CRAZY action and we caught several fish to 40 lbs keeping 4 releasing the rest. Check out the Pic’s and Videos

I hear there will be more heading our way for the bunker pods west are still west of us!!!

Baby there’s a SHARK in the Water

Capt Paul Capt Adrian and Chris Nappi 159 lbs Mako

We got an Early start Thursday July 1 2010 and headed out 20 miles SE of Moriches Inlet. we were in 64 degree water and didn’t see anything so we kept heading south deeper into the Abyss.  Just as we pasted the 25 mile range we came upon a pod of Blue Fin Tunas breaking the surface. Oh this looks great, and we set out a spread of trolling rigs asap.

Trolling for Tuna

We trolled around for an hour and a half but no luck we even went real close to a Scallop boat in about 180 feet of water

Big Scallop Boat working in 180' of water

So we went back to where we marked some bait saw the tuna and had a temp break from 64 to 68 degrees. As soon as we set up shop we had a 6′ plus Blue Shark all around the boat. He was checking out the Mako Magnet, Chum Bucket and trying to eat the birds. It was crazy to see hime open its mouth and come right out of the water. Thank God he didn’t touch any of our baits but we did get him to take a few baits we tied on a line and threw it out there. Check out this Video

This went on for about and Hour we had our fun with him Heres a few pics and videos

I was even able to snap a few underwater shots

So then all of sudden another Tail goes ZIPPING threw our slick and Chris and Adrian Scramble to get a pitch bait ready as I’m standing right in front of the short line baited with a fresh bunker. I giggle it 4 times like I’m ringing the dinner bell and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ there goes the reel.   I set the Hook and the Shark does a Cart Wheel out of the water and the fights on. Now there was no time to get the video camera or picture because this shark must have been gut hook for he came right to the boat. Chris and Adrian are quick to get the Harpoon and Flying Gaff ready. Chris is saying slow down Pablo he’s green, I say “the wire showing” and Chris Grabbs the wire and Adrian hits the Shark so hard he bend the metal harpoon as it sinks deeply into the Mako. The Mako goes about 6′ and rears up like he wants to bite us and drags his teeth down the side of my starboard engine. At this point were not sure that the harpoon is in deep enough and Adrian hits him again with the flying gaff. Now I quick get a tail rope on him and it’s GAME OVER for the Mako in 16 minutes total fighting time.
