I Want to Catch a Big Striped Bass

and also If you really want to laugh check this video out. It shows the inside mind of a surf fisherman in the fall… It’s the ultimate fisherman Dream….

Click this Link BELOW and watch this video it’s halarious  http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/7132093/?ref=nf

All of us Fishermen get a bit cagey when we can’t go out and do what we love to do especially in the fall. Such was the case this past weekend with Hurricane Igor making HUGE waves and rough seas for the south shore of Long Island. I heard of several boats that were flipped over and 1 person died in Jupiter Florida because of the high surf hitting his boat. Here is the News story with all the pictures http://news1.capitalbay.com/news/florida_man_killed_after_being.html.

So what does a fisherman do when boating is out??? Surf Casting… I was talking to my good friend Jr about catching Albie’s, Jr has a spot out east on the north shore where he catches Albie’s from the shore. He invited me to go along I said sure why not. Now I’ve only been surf fishing 2 other times. Once under the Smith Point Bridge a few years ago and the other in 2008 playing leap frog on the east jetty of Moriches Inlet. Although I didn’t mind the Bridge fishing I will never go back to the Rock hopping on Slimy Green boulders in the middle of the night for any fish!!! However the experience I had fishing with Jr left a good taste in my mouth. Let me explain Jr picked me up at 5:30 am we headed to one of his sacred places on the FLAT CALM North Shore of Long Island. We were both armed with our favorite Deadly Dick #1 lures ready to go in several sizes. We parked the car and walked a few hundred yards to the pristine shore and waded into the water and began casting.

Beautiful North Shore

This was the 1st thing I saw walking down to the beach. It looked liked a something out of a movie it was picture perfect to say the least…

So there we are both of us with MEGA high hopes of hooking up to the speed demons (Albie’s) once again.

Jr with the retrieve

We tried from 6:30 am till 9:30 am in 3 different spots with no luck not even a hit??? But it’s not always about the fish… how can I put this into words??? Ok I try to set the mood. There was No wind in the 1st two spots, air temp was perfect around 65-68. This  made it feel like fall but VERY Comfortable for wearing waders. The shore line had a lot of small rocks and was easy to walk on. The water was FLAT CALM , GIN CLEAR and no bugs to pester us. The sun was just starting to light up the sky and there was only 1 other person fishing on the the stretch of beach we went to. It looked so promising!!! Jr kept saying the day he came here was just like this with no visible signs of fish any where yet he had one of his best days of fishing ever. As I waded out into the water I noticed the pressure of the water around my legs no big deal just felt a slight squeezing. I remember when I would step out of the water the warm blood would flow back into my legs and I commented to Jr every time it happened lol. I was really having a good time even though I never had a hit. I was like 1 with nature not to sound corny but how else can you explain it??? We did see only a handful of guys fishing some were pulling in Porgies (Scup) and talked to two guys that were close to us. I was quite happy with my outing and we stopped off at Deli for a real good egg sandwich and Coffee on our way home. I told Jr I would love to give it another try and we made plans for another day. Sometimes trying new things could be a good thing…

I’ll be out real Soon for the Fall run has begun

Capt. Adrian wasn’t the only one to land a couple of Albies

Capt.Paul Peluso with a Montauk Albie

Hanging out of the mouth of this Albie was a 005 Diamond Jig with a dark green tube. This was a very effective Lure for me today as I hooked up again and again   . The second Albie I got to see hit my lure like a fright train  taking my line at an amazing rate of speed!!! At 1 point I was almost down to the backing on my spool and started to cup the reel with my hand to slow the fish down   . When I finally got the fish to the boat I saw that it was hooked below the mouth (foul hooked) and this is what made the fish so hard to land .

Capt.Paul with another Albie

Montauk Albie

After a while the tide died and the Albie’s slowed down we moved around and found some more birds working the rain bait, small silver fish. This is where we both landed a couple of Blues and made our MONTAUK GRAND SLAM COMPLETE

Montauk Blue Fish

HOT ALBIE LURES

After that we tried buck tailing the rips but that only lead to more Blue Fish till the Albie showed up again right in front of the light house again. We played a little while longer and then we headed for the barn having a long drive back. We kept 4 Albie’s for Shark Bait and of course the Striper . Can’t wait to put the Albie out for a Big Shark Stay Tuned…

Getting Ready for Fall with a Bunker Barrel

With Fall only a days away and the temps starting to drop, I’m all ready seeing some leaves starting to turn colors. The Fall is my favorite time to fish . As the days grow shorter the migrating patterns of all the bait fish start to make there way south. The Fishing really heats up as the fish need to FATTEN up for there southerly migration. This leads me to today’s report. Last year at this time the Peanut Bunker were very accessible all over Moriches. It was very easy to locate them and round up enough with a cast net to go fishing for the day. That was great but it takes time away from your fishing not to mention its a filthy operation getting all the sea weed and BLACK MUD from the bottom all over you and your boat. It sucks all day you smell like the bottom of the Great South Bay . Now I have a Bunker Net pen I purchased a couple of years ago for $80 bucks.

Bunker Net Pen

Peanut Bunker in Bunker Net Pen

This was a good thing easy, light weight and can hold a lot of bait. The problem is the bait only lasts 2 days at the most . Seems the fish rub them self raw against the netting and get stressed out turn red and the die after only a few hours of being captive. So here was the Idea was hatched. Last September I netted the Mother Load of Peanuts so many I could not fit them all in my well . A good friend of mine Dave was just coming out of his canal I quickly called over to him and I filled his well. He later told me that the bunker I gave him were still alive in November when he pulled his boat . NO WAY I said how did they live so long??? He said he has a Barrel, I said “A-WHAT?” A barrel Dave said, I took a 55 gallon plastic Barrel and drilled holes in it. No Way I said again, Yeah I’m telling you it works Pablo you got to make one. It seems the Plastic Barrel doesn’t rub the fish raw and they can swim in the circle motion for weeks on end with out dieing. So last week After I was able to net the bunker again my mind went to creating a pen that will hold live bait inexpensively and have them live for days. I stopped at the local Car-Wash and the Manager was Happy to give me as many drums as I wanted . I could only fit 2 in my SUV but I may go back and get 2 more if this works up. I called my good friend Tim Ashton and we made a quick stop at Home Depot and picked up a Flat Head Drill bit set for $5 bucks and 100′ of rope for $8 bucks and headed over to his house to start drilling. First we cut off the top using a Jig saw and then we drilled a few hundred holes in each Barrel it took about 20 minutes maybe to complete this and I was stoked to get them in the water and fill em up .

I stopped at my local pool store and bought 2 noodles for $3 bucks each and fasten them to the top with Zip Ties I added the rope and dropped them in . I couldn’t wait to fill them so I headed out to get gas and the bay was jumping . I called my good friend Chris Burien said get down here I need some help the bunker is so thick I can net them from the dock!!! By my self  its hard to maneuver the boat throw the net. Chris came down and with 1 net we landed about 100 Prime baits .

Mullet

We even caught some Mullets. I was having a great time just catching bait we caught so many I easily filled my well and had to use the fish box for the rest of them. This made a mess out of the boat but I didn’t care if this works out I’d gladly do it again. I rushed home and dumped all the Bass Candies into my 2 new holding pens . It took 2 hours to clean up the mess

Stocking the Barrels

Bunker Barrels

All in all it took $19 bucks to rig both pens 20 minutes to drill all the holes. 1/2 hour to catch the bait and 2 hours of clean up at the dock LOL!!! Can’t wait to go FISHING maybe later today evening trip I’m thinking about   up

LET THE FALL FISHING BEGIN!!!
