Sharking it’s that time of Year again

Mr.Mako Released

Headed out 5 am Wednesday July 20 2011 with Capt.Adrian and his buddy Andy for some Sharking. It was flat calm conditions the water was 67 by the inlet and we headed to our spot approximately 10 miles out. By my spot the water temp went to 69 degrees and I we set up shop about 6am with 3 lines out and had our 1st taker by 8 AM. I saw him swim around the second float then the short line starts ticking off. He picked up the bait and ran a little then dropped it, picked it up and ran slowly again then dropped it. Finally he started to peel a little line and Capt.Adrian set the hook. Andy started to reel in the middle line and some how they crossed and Bink Shark gone. Ok we had a good drift 1 mph winds were light but pushing us NW. Around 10 AM we had another run off this time Capt.Adrian set the hook and would ya know it it was the same Blue Shark from before. He had all 3 rigs in his mouth so we cut him lose and set him free. We decided to go back up and re set a head of where we started before and on our way back up I spotted some fish jumping by a log. It was a small school of Mahi’s and 1 hit Adrian’s Gold jig and followed it back to the boat. We tried everything Spearing Clam Squid Pea nut bunker I netted the night before Diamond jig rattle trap even the fly rod but no takers we spend about 1 hour as we saw them circling around the boat. They looked like 5 to 10 lbs man I would have loved to have caught just 1 but…

So then we set up shop again and our drift was perfect taking us back over the exact same route as before and wouldn’t ya know right on the spot we had the Mako from 1 year ago I see the fin up by the Second float baited with tuna a Albie I had caught last fall. He picked it up made a short run and I stuck it to him. Not knowing what I was in for I was hoping for a big fight but he came right to the boat all 75 lbs of him no match for my Shimano 50. we had him by the boat took some pictures and sent him back.

Well after that we decided to use our 3rd can of chum and we had 1 more Shark playing with our baits but he wouldn’t commit and we called it a day around 4pm. on our way in we saw a huge pod of Dolphins swimming towards us. Some of them decided to ride our wake but it was short lived and that was that. Good day lots of life and action to keep us alert. Will try again next week.

Fire Island Light House

How much Futher can it be? i look over at Dave and he says Pablo I don’t have anywhere to go I’m down. So we find the Bunker pods only thing by the time we got there 8:30-9am the Bite was ending and we had no takers making hours of drifts through huge bunker schools. Around 1:30pm I said were all ready here might as well go Fluking for a few housr then come back for the dinner crowd. We head to 75′ of water noe in Fire Island you have to go like 10 miles Wholly Crap!!! In Moriches you have to 1 mile… Anyway we had several shorts and the 1 keeper.

Dave with the Fire Island Keeper

Back at the dock dissapointed no Big Bass I get a call from Brian. Hey Pablo what are you doing tomorrow, I got no one to go with? Without hesitation I said I’m in !!! See you at 5:30 Am

Big Bass I-Tiss Continues for Pablo

Capt.Paul Capt.Brian and Rich July 11 2011

Let me start out by saying what a GREAT day I had with Capt. Brian Phelps of  www.ReelObsessionFishing.com 631-252-5894 . We went 7 for 7 on BIG STRIPED BASS to 40 lbs and I caught andreleased my 3,000 Striper. It was just AMAZING to see miles of Bunker being harassed by BIG FISH. Everywhere you looked you saw Pod after Pod. Thank you Brian for one of the best fishing trips I had in a while.

Now here’s the long version

I’ve been reading the reports from Capt.Brian Phelps out of Fire Island he’s been catching some really BIG STRIPERS lately and all I could do is wait for them to Moriches so I can get another crack at them. For what ever reason they are just stacked up out side Fire Island for the past month and every now and then I get a shot at some Big Bass but these guys have it everyday . Just Imagine if this was by me I would NEVER come in .
Anyway I jumped at the chance to fish that area and Capt.Brian wanted to head out early, REAL EARLY 4 am… I said dude I’ll never make 4 AM make it 4:30 and were on. 4:15 Pablo I have to get gas. Oh Man Ok, that means I have to leave my house at 3:30 AM. Needless to say I made it there on time and we were off.
On the way to the Inlet we stopped at Frank + Dick’s Bait and Tackle/Gas/Convenience store. This was unbelievable here in the middle of the Bay stood an awesome place to come to. As soon as I walked in this place I knew it was a 1st class Boat place for right there on the counter was a Great Selection of Cigars in 2 Humidors and we all know how much Pablo
likes Cigars . So I looked around there was an Awesome Full Tackle shop loaded with everything even a line spooler . I was shocked he had everything from Snapper rods to Shark Reels at decent prices too… I turned to Brain and Rich and said what a GOLD mine here. They said it was a dump a few years ago and that they fixed it all up and turned it into a Great Summertime Waterfront Hangout . I said Imagine trying to get this approved today
HAHAHAHAHA!!! Hi Brookhaven Town I would like to get building permits for a
Gas/Tackle/Convenience store for the Island in the back of Moriches Inlet known
as Bird Island . I think I would get arrested just for asking LOL!!!!
Ok enough of that lets get to the good part the Fishing. We headed
west and the sun wasn’t even up yet. We were the 1st boat on the seen and soon
we started to see a few splashes here and there and it just kept getting bigger
and Bigger and BIGGER!!! Brian had these HUGE weighted Bunker snags 10-0 meat
hooks on them. This made snagging extremely easy and it wasn’t long before Brian
was hooked up into a BIG FISH!!! However here’s where it gets funny Brian likes
his drag set EXTREAMLY HARD I mean CRANKED DOWN all most till you don’t have and
drag. I said Brian before he got hooked up, Brian your drag is way to tight  are
you nuts your gonna bust your fish off ? He says I like it that way
Pablo so only Big fish will pull drag. I go Ok? But don’t say I didn’t warn you.
With that he goes to turn his handle on his Shimano 4000 and Snap it breaks off
right in his hand . I quickly try to remove the other handle from the another same reel but its frozen and I can’t get it out even with Pliers . So he says I’ll hand crank it
in and we land the 1st 25 lbs fish of the day. We kept her because the fight was
so long she was wore out and we wanted to go home with something to eat too .
I tried the old fashion way snag a bunker drag it in and re set on my conventional rod and reel and drop it down to the bottom. This was a mistake as there was so many bunker for the Bass to eat if you weren’t right in there face the chances of you being picked up out of the MILLIONS was Slim to none as a lot of other boats were using this tactic and just sitting in what I like to call BAIT and WAIT the most BORRING kind of fishing to me.  The key was to find a Pod of Bunker being attacked by fish snag a Bunker right in the commotion and let it sit there. If you didn’t get picked up and drifted out of the school reel it in UN-Hook your
Bunker and Snag another. Repeat as many times as possible or until you catch a fish .

Rich

Rich caught the second BIG FISH it also was a good 25-30 lbs class fish and I started to get worried Oh No I don’t want to be that guy with no fish and I began to really concentrate on the schools snagging in the most Harassed spots and Presto Pablo On!!! . She was a Nice fish around 20-25 lbs and I felt like pressure come off and could relax with the Skunk now
off of me . We moved around from Pod to Pod this was key because it wasn’t long before MANY boats showed up and were right on top of you . There were a few dummies who didn’t have a CLUE. Come on man Don’t run right through the school?! You A-HOLE!!! Go find your own pod there’s only 10 miles of Bunker out here . This proved to be the key
because we found a school of BIG GIRLS 30 to 40 lbs class and we had them all to
our self’s . I hooked into another 25 lbs fish and Brian hooked into 2 more all said and done we went 7 for 7 with fish to 40 lbs and only keeping 3 releasing the rest Monday July 11 2011

Hey If you want in on some of this action don’t wait who knows how
long this GREAT BITE will last call Capt.Brian Phelps 631-252-5894 www.ReelObsessionFishing.com don’t
forget to tell him Pablo sent ya !!!

Has My Fishing Gone to the DOGS???

DOG FISH

Thursday July 7 2011 headed out with Good Friend Peter Park, now know as Dr.Fish  and a 3 of his friends. As soon as we got out of my canal I noticed 3 heads swimming off in the distance. I said to Peter, Hey Peter whats that? 3 Ducks??? He said I don’t know Pablo go closer? I said maybe its 3 Deers crossing I’ve seen that before… As we got closer I saw it was 3 Golden Retrievers swimming far out in the Bay??? What the heck? I slowly motored over to them to thinking they needed to be rescued. But I didn’t have any Scooby Snacks  so they weren’t interested in being rescued and started to head for land.

We stayed with them till they got back to land and then Headed off to look for those BIG BASS. I headed back down the beach but No Bunker was found we sent down some bunker chunks where I was marking real good but no luck and we didn’t stay long. The Ocean was a little rough in early am but became nicer as the day wore on Ocean water temp was 65 but clear and slow rollers made it a nice day over all.

We started at a spot I had from last year where some Big Fluke like to hang out but all we caught were Ulgy Skates. Here Peter was Bitten by one as he tried to D-Hook it.

Skate Stuck to Peter's Arm

Ouch the Skate Bit my Finger and it Really Hurts  So we left that area and headed East to the Sea Bass City Anchored up and began to catch everything from Sea Bass, Porgies, Bluefish and even Flukes it was Lock and Load there for a while with some nice size Sea Bass coming over the rails

After a good 2 hours of catching we had a full live well of all good eating fish we decided to hit the Sand Bar where I knew some Big Blue were hanging out. Sure enough on the 1st cast bam Big Chopper Blue. We hooked a few more and released them all .

Now it was around 1 PM and we a few drifts through the inlet on Incoming tide but had no hook ups. Everyone was shot so I called it a day at 1:30 pm and we were off to the fillet table .

Awesome Mixed bag for these Beginners easy fishing most of the time we used this 1oz Gold Hammered Jig tipped with a small piece of Squid.
