Groom Killed by Shark on Honeymoon

Brit killed on Seychelles honeymoon
as reported by the Sun : http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3756527/Bride-sees-shark-eat-groom-in-Seychelles.html
A BRITISH bridegroom was killed by a shark off an idyllic honeymoon island yesterday – as the horrified bride he wed 11 days ago looked on.
Ian Redmond, 30, was attacked in shallow water 100ft off a Seychelles beach
Bride Gemma Houghton, 27, from Wigan, was sunbathing and heard him shout “Help, help” as the Bull shark savaged him.
Ian suffered horrific injuries as the monster tore huge chunks of flesh from his body.
Fishermen carried him to the beach in a dinghy but he died before paramedics could arrive as his wife wept beside him and screamed “that’s my husband
It was the second attack by a Bull shark in two weeks on Praslin Island in the Seychelles – 20 miles from where Prince William and wife Kate honeymooned.
A witness, also called Ian, said: “The swimmer was missing a huge chunk of flesh from his left leg, so much so that I could see the bone of his thigh. He was sickeningly pale, but still had his flippers on both feet.
“A woman ran over and started screaming. She said, ‘That’s my husband! We were just married’.”
An islander said: “The man was swimming close to the beach. He began splashing and shouting. His arm was ripped off and parts of his torso were missing. There was a horrific amount of blood in the water. It was like Jaws.”
Another witness said someone grabbed Gemma and kept her away from her mutilated husband.
He added: “The damage was too great. It was too horrific for her to see.”
Beach restaurant boss Jeanne Vargiolu, 56, said Ian had lost one arm and had the flesh stripped off one leg.
He also had holes in his chest and stomach.
She added: “All the meat on one leg was gone.”

Bill Houghton, the bride’s uncle, said: “Gemma is just devastated. They had a perfect wedding. Ian was a fantastic bloke.”
The couple, who married on August 6, were at stunning Anse Lazio beach in the early evening – about 3pm UK time – when the shark attacked in shallow waters, 100ft from the shore.
The previous shark attack victim was a French diver.
A Seychelles tourism source said: “The latest bite marks are consistent with that of a Bull shark. It is probably the same rogue maneater.”
The couple’s families, David and Coleta Houghton and Stephen and Corinne Redmond, were flying to the resort last night.

Sharking another Mako
July 30 2010.
Chris and I are currently in 1st place in the 8th. Annual MakoMatt/Noreast Mako-Thresher Big Dog Shootout, with our 159 lbs Mako from July 1.
I said to Chris we should go out 1 more time to see if we can land a bigger Shark and hold down our current position. The weather looked good for Friday and so we set sail at 4:30 am out of Moriches heading SE to look for the temp break and maybe a Tuna if were lucky. 10 miles out water temp 68, 20 miles out water temp 70 ok looks good here but lets keep going in search of some Tuna. about 25 Miles out the seas started to get a bit nasty 4′ to 6′ and we saw a pod of dolphins and decided to try for the tuna there since the seas were getting to large for us.
We trolled East and West for about 45 minutes but we didn’t have any luck. So I decided to head back in where the Seas were a little nicer and the temp break was. So we headed north a bit and we set up shop on one of my favorite spots that I always catch Sharks at. Lines were in 8:30 am and we chummed up some Bunker, Tuna and a varietyof other left over bait fish from both Chris’s and my freezers.
So around 10 am we decide to change out our baits and re-set them to hopefully entice a taker. After we re-set the deep and Middle lines I pulled in the Short line and swapped out the bunker for a Butterflied Mackerelbait while i was letting it out about 10′ down it got picked up right away. The Shark must have been hanging right under the boat and the reel started to tick off slowly, then a little faster. Chris says to me are you gonna let me set this one you got the last one I said be my guest and he let the Shark run and locked up the drag and FISH ON!!! Now for what ever reason the Shark came right to the boat I barely had time to put my gloves on and grabbed the wire leader. The Shark was under the boat and I puller her out just enough to see her tail and we both said MAKO!!! The Shark took off but didn’t get far. Chris instructed Neil to put the belt on and passed him the rod so that he was free to dart the and Gaff the Shark while I wired him. Chris just about got the harpoon tied off to the clete and the Mako was at the boat again. Chris hit the Shark in the perfect spot right behind the head and then got the Gaff into the Sharks Gills a few seconds later while I held him close to the boat. Neil then came over and he tail roped the Shark and that was all over for the Shark I’d say in about 10 minutes.
After that 10 am Mako bite the ocean really got calm and we decided to head in. We did see a few other fish and a Sea Turtle but no Tuna.
Hopefull our luck will hold out and We will hold our 1st place. I will keep you posted
