On February 14th I went to the New York Sportfishing Federation’s “Freeport Show” there I won a free trip aboard the Shinnecock Star. I’ve been keeping an eye on the weather and the  reports and with temps into the 50′s and relatively calm seas I made the ride to Shinny and jumped aboard the Star for some close to home Cod Fishing.  We headed out 7 am and made 2 drops with no fish then Capt John moved to another spot and everybody started to hook up on Cods and Conga Eels. Conga Eels are like big eels with a giant mouth plus teeth.

To be honest with you I was happy to be out fishing again and anything pulling on my line was ok with me. It was so warm I took off my jacket for a while. I had the pool fish till the last drop when a nice Cod was decked by one of the other passengers and Billy Tibbits I think he said his last name was high hook with 7 Keeper Cods. Billy was an Old Salt telling us stories about how he caught Cod less than a mile off the shore in the 1960′s. Here’s a close up of one of the fatties I caught on a high low rig 10 oz lead using clam for bait.

The wind built up slowly all day and by the time we headed in it created a chop on the water causing a lot of spray to cover over the boat soaking poor Liam while he cut the fish up on the ride in. Along with Liam getting soaked all our rods were also. When I got home I said how am I going to get all this salt water off my brand new Capt.Neil rod since the out side water is shut off??? Don’t laugh but I gave my new rod a good soaking in the shower

I had a real good time with Capt.John and I would recommend his boat. If your thinking of cashing in on some of this good fishing you better hurry for the Fish usually move to deeper waters after St.Patrick’s day  .
