Baby there’s a SHARK in the Water

Capt Paul Capt Adrian and Chris Nappi 159 lbs Mako

We got an Early start Thursday July 1 2010 and headed out 20 miles SE of Moriches Inlet. we were in 64 degree water and didn’t see anything so we kept heading south deeper into the Abyss.  Just as we pasted the 25 mile range we came upon a pod of Blue Fin Tunas breaking the surface. Oh this looks great, and we set out a spread of trolling rigs asap.

Trolling for Tuna

We trolled around for an hour and a half but no luck we even went real close to a Scallop boat in about 180 feet of water

Big Scallop Boat working in 180' of water

So we went back to where we marked some bait saw the tuna and had a temp break from 64 to 68 degrees. As soon as we set up shop we had a 6′ plus Blue Shark all around the boat. He was checking out the Mako Magnet, Chum Bucket and trying to eat the birds. It was crazy to see hime open its mouth and come right out of the water. Thank God he didn’t touch any of our baits but we did get him to take a few baits we tied on a line and threw it out there. Check out this Video

This went on for about and Hour we had our fun with him Heres a few pics and videos

I was even able to snap a few underwater shots

So then all of sudden another Tail goes ZIPPING threw our slick and Chris and Adrian Scramble to get a pitch bait ready as I’m standing right in front of the short line baited with a fresh bunker. I giggle it 4 times like I’m ringing the dinner bell and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ there goes the reel.   I set the Hook and the Shark does a Cart Wheel out of the water and the fights on. Now there was no time to get the video camera or picture because this shark must have been gut hook for he came right to the boat. Chris and Adrian are quick to get the Harpoon and Flying Gaff ready. Chris is saying slow down Pablo he’s green, I say “the wire showing” and Chris Grabbs the wire and Adrian hits the Shark so hard he bend the metal harpoon as it sinks deeply into the Mako. The Mako goes about 6′ and rears up like he wants to bite us and drags his teeth down the side of my starboard engine. At this point were not sure that the harpoon is in deep enough and Adrian hits him again with the flying gaff. Now I quick get a tail rope on him and it’s GAME OVER for the Mako in 16 minutes total fighting time.
